Consideration about Heritage
Villa Santa Paula
The definition of concepts and general principles about the historical- architectonic Heritage is an important task due to the complexity of the subjects, which must include clear definitions of topics about culture, history and identity.
The culture is an element that characterizes the society throughout history. The concept of heritage is a logic consequence of the product of the social groups throughout many generations.
A society identifies itself with its culture and the evidence about its individuality is its heritage. The difference with other elements of history is that the architectonic heritage is the living testimony of history.
When we take the urban-architectonic heritage as the expression of the social groups throughout time, it is possible to explain their inclusion in the Culture and the History. This defines the ideological changes about its concepts.
For a long time, the concept of Heritage was exclusively applied to the monuments, which are relevant manifestations related to history. Within the concept of monumental heritage we include those works whose symbolic value are the valid reference for such a category.
Little by little the concept of heritage has been enlarged, taking into account the expressions of every day life which are representative of other social status, not necessarily the ones considered as fundamental or individual: “Non Monumental” Heritage. These buildings constitute the neighborhoods that express the life style of the people, and show their customs, identifying the social groups throughout time. They create urban images and visual habits, making a particular atmosphere where the whole value is expressed. All these elements that can be recognized in our city are also components of a heritage of a very important value.
The dynamism of the historical-cultural processes is what establishes the definition of what is and what could be considered heritage. In this sense, all cultural possessions that tend to strengthen the urban memory, and to solidify the identity and the belonging of the people, and contribute to the harmonic development of the city, constitute the heritage of Mar del Plata.
